Psychological Appraisals

Psychological testing can be a valuable part of the recruitment and selection process. It provides the opportunity of gaining objective information which, if used appropriately can improve the effectiveness of the recruitment process, and reduce the risk associated with selection decisions.

Whilst such information should not be considered in isolation, when combined with other selection criteria such as qualification and experience, interview performance, and reference checking, the overall recruitment process can be enhanced.

A Registered Psychologist would be consulted in deciding upon the make-up of the battery of tests being administered. The tests selected will be dependent upon the nature of the position being recruited.

 Administration of the Tests

Many of the tests utilized can only be administered, scored and interpreted by people with appropriate qualifications or experience. Online testing for some or all of the assessment battery is recommended particularly for regional locations where a consultant psychologist is often difficult to locate.

Online testing provides an opportunity to make testing more easily available. The Australian Council for Educational Research says of online testing that:

            ....there are ways of using the online technology that gives added flexibility without comprising the validity of the testing procedure. For example, instead of test candidates coming in to a central supervised testing point, practitioners can arrange for them to be tested locally under suitable supervision. Arrangements might be made with a university librarian, a local HR practitioner or the manager of a branch office to provide a computer and a suitable environment for candidates to sit a test. This can be arranged easily by email – sending through passwords and usernames, electronic versions of administration instructions…
