Human Resource practitioners, Line Managers and Senior Staff of all Local Governments and Associate Members are invited to attend the Human Resources Seminar at the 2012 Local Government Convention.

The full day seminar will cover a range of practical discussions and presentations on topical human resources issues and will finish with networking drinks..

The seminar will be hosted by WALGA Local Government Workplace Solutions, with guest speakers from the Local Government Industry, Employment Law specialists along with the Local Government Association of South Australia who will give a presentation about Workforce Planning, in the context of the Integrated Planning and Reporting Framework.

The Seminar will cover five key areas:

Workforce Planning and Development: The reality behind the myths and legends around what workforce planning and development means and what it means to HR practitioners on the ground.

Traineeships and Apprenticeships: We will look at ways to secure trainees and apprentices to work within your local government and include a practical example from a Local Government on their experiences in employing trainees and apprentices, the benefit and issues you need to be aware of.

A practical guide to recruitment in Local Government: A discussion on what is good practice in recruiting the right people for your Local Government, particularly at a time when Local Governments are considering the impact of structural reform changes on their employees.

Performance Management - Getting It Right: A practical ‘how to’ guide on conducting performance management, using real life examples and best practice within the industry. This presentation and panel discussion is not only valuable for HR staff, but will equip you with the tools to coach line managers through the process.

Misconduct and Conflict of Interest in Local Government: In recent times, high-profile media coverage has focused on the inappropriate activities of State Government and Local Government officers, some of which has led to dismissal or further court proceedings against individuals. We will explore the theme of misconduct risk avoidance and feature the experiences of a Local Government practitioner.
